Alcohol tastes sweeter when listening to loud music
In a small study scientists have found that listening to music caused people to rate alcoholic drinks as sweeter than they would without music. The researchers found that analytical tasks such as having to listen and repeat make it harder for people to judge alcohol content, but music did not. On the other hand, music increased heightened subjects’ subjective experience of sweetness. Previous studies have found that loud white noise makes things seem to taste less pleasant. These contrasting results suggest that the nature of the sound and whether it is enjoyable could be a factor affecting people’s perceptions of taste.
