Sobriety bracelets for alcohol offenders
Metropolitan police commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe, has suggested the introduction of US style “sobriety” bracelets in Britain. He said that 80% to 90% of night time arrests by the Metropolitan police were alcohol related. The devices, usually worn around the alcohol, measure blood alcohol levels in a person at regular intervals and send the data back to a central point. They work by measuring alcohol concentration in perspiration from the skin and can detect even low levels of alcohol in the blood. They can be used to monitor people on probation for alcohol related offences who have been forbidden to drink. In one US state their use on drink drivers was found to reduce road deaths as well as domestic violence by preventing these people from drinking.
