Prescribing Medical Cannabis
Find out who can prescribe medical cannabis, access training resources, and connect with the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society for expert guidance and support.
Who can prescribe?
Any doctor on the GMC Specialist Register can initiate prescription of medical cannabis – this is usually a hospital consultant. Other doctors and Independent Prescribing pharmacists or nurses can prescribe at follow-up. There are NICE guidelines available for prescribers, and also clear guidance on the Medical Clinicians Cannabis Society (MCCS) website. They have excellent resources for recommendations and guidance.

Is there training available?
Yes, we recommend you register with the Medical Clinicians Cannabis Society (MCCS) and sign up for Medical Cannabis Explained: live training sessions with Prof. Mike Barnes to learn about cannabis history, how to prescribe, safe dosing and much more.

About the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society
The Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society (MCCS) is the UK’s independent, non-profit network of doctors and healthcare professionals who are interested to learn more about medical cannabis. The Society provides practical education, expert guidance, and a supportive professional community, to help clinicians prescribe safely, confidently, and in line with best practice. MCCS supports evidence-led prescribing, and the responsible integration of cannabis-based medicines into UK clinical practice.
MCCS runs regular CPD-accredited training sessions and events, led by experienced specialists including Professor Mike Barnes, and maintains an up-to-date library of clinical guidance and best-practice documents to support prescribers in clinical practice. Open-access publications, such as Managing CBPMs in UK Hospitals & Care Settings (2025) and the Good Practice Guide for Prescribers of CBPMs (2025), are available on the MCCS website, to help clinicians understand practical aspects of prescribing and service delivery.
Clinicians interested in joining the Society can do so via the MCCS website, to access the full range of member benefits, including members-only publications, peer discussion forums, and professional development opportunities.
