The whole Drug Science Team is shocked and incredibly saddened by the news of Hannah Deacon’s passing on May 6th, 2025, after ‘a short and brutal illness’
Hannah was just 45 years old. Our deepest condolences go out to her family and close friends.
Hannah was an avid supporter of Drug Science and one of our valued patrons since 2018.
We first got to know Hannah through our medical cannabis work, when we learned about Alfie’s journey and the effort, work, and tremendous strength she deployed in order for her son to receive the medicine that could best alleviate his symptoms. She was open, vulnerable and disarming, and completely full of love and light despite (or maybe because of) all the struggles she went through for Alfie.
My eldest son is the same age as Alfie and Hannah really opened my eyes to what it means to have a child with special needs, and the struggles needed to ensure they are looked after in the best possible way (and all this is in addition to the fight for medical cannabis).
Hannah incorporated the ethos of Drug Science: always fighting for what is right and fair, to make the world a better place, and to never to give up, even in the face of great adversity.
Hannah was warm-hearted, kind, funny, strong, and outspoken - she hated unfairness. She was incredibly grateful that Alfie received his medical cannabis prescription, but she continued to fight so that others could have this access, too. Thank you, Hannah, for everything that you have done - we will miss you dearly.
One of the many ways we can honour Hannah is to ensure that her legacy lives on. Hannah’s achievements in increasing awareness and much needed access to medical cannabis in the UK have been second to none - but her work is not yet done. The lack of patient access to NHS medical cannabis prescriptions remains, so many children with treatment resistant epilepsies are still suffering. We owe it to Hannah to continue this work. Medical cannabis companies, regulators and decision-makers...take note.
